NinaHi, I'm Nina.

RayAnd I'm Ray.

NinaRay, you returned a jacket last week.

RayI did.

NinaAnd you told me you practiced what to say.

RayFor ten minutes. In the car.

NinaWhat did you practice?

RayA story. I said my wife thought the color was wrong for the season and I also gained weight.

NinaRay.

RayWhat.

NinaYou don't need a reason. That's today's whole lesson.

RayNo reason at all?

NinaMost stores here take things back for thirty days. They don't ask why.

RayBut she did ask why.

NinaShe asked to type it in the computer. One word is enough. Wrong size. Didn't fit.

RayDidn't fit. That's much shorter than my story.

NinaLet's do the sentences. The first one is the only one you really need.

RayWhich is?

NinaHi, I'd like to return this.

RayI'd like to return this.

NinaPolite, clear, done. Then they ask one question.

RayDo you have the receipt?

NinaThat one. And if you don't — say it, don't panic. I don't have it, but I paid with this card.

RayThe card works?

NinaVery often. They can find it. That sentence has saved me twice.

RayWhat else do they ask?

NinaBack to the card, or store credit? They're asking how you want the money.

RayStore credit means I have to spend it here.

NinaRight. So say back to the card, please, unless you want to come back.

RayBack to the card, please. Got it.

NinaLet's run it. I'm at the counter.

RayHi, I'd like to return this.

NinaSure. Do you have the receipt?

RayI do, here it is.

NinaAny reason?

RayIt didn't fit.

NinaBack to the card, or store credit?

RayBack to the card, please.

NinaDone. Nine words total, and no story about your wife.

RayShe will be relieved.

NinaSo — I'd like to return this, do you have the receipt, back to the card. And you don't owe anyone a reason.

RayThanks, Nina.

NinaThat's it for today. See you next time.
